High Risk Deployment (HRD) Course

 

Instructors:

  • Officer Scott DiIullo – K-9 Handler/Trainer Scottsdale, (AZ) PD

  • Constable Joel MacKown – K9 Handler/Trainer, Royal Canadian Mounted Police

 

HRD Course Overview:  To provide selected K-9 teams with training and practical experience on sound, functional and “real world” high risk deployment tactics to be utilized during K-9 Patrol and SWAT operations, in urban and rural environments.  Tactical Team will be present to work with. 

 

Course Disciplines:

  • Tactical Obedience/Agility

  • Perimeter Control

  • Tandem Apprehension

  • Target Discrimination

  • Target Disruption

  • Team Movement

  • Tracking/Trailing (urban/rural)

  • Area Searches ( urban/rural)

  • Vehicle Assaults/Extractions

  • Building Searches

 

Required handler equipment list:

  • Canine

  • K-9 ballistic vest

  • K-9 harness

  • Long lines-2

  • Patrol leash-1

  • Muzzle

  • Full Patrol Duty gear (Flashlight!)

  • Full SWAT kit/gear

Tracking

Tracking Course Overview:  To provide K-9 teams with training and practical experience. Tracking and problem solving, in urban and rural environments. 

 

Explosives

Explosive Course Overview:  To provide K-9 teams with training and practical experience “real world” EOD deployments and with post blast scenarios.

 

Narcotics

 

Instructors:

  • Damian Vice – Wilmington, (DE) PD

Narcotics Course Overview:  To provide K-9 teams with training and practical experience advanced hides scenarios and drive building.

 

Eastern Police Canine Association Inc. Certification Training

 

Instructors:

  • Lt. Gary Harvey – Madison County Sheriff’s Office (VA) K-9

E.P.C.A. Certification Training:  Preparation training for testing with the Eastern Police Canine Association Inc for Street Ready Police Dog, Police Dog 1, Police Dog 2, Tracking Dog Certifications.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Scott DiIullo

K-9 Handler/Trainer Scottsdale, (AZ) PD www.valor-k9.com

Scott is a nineteen year veteran officer and K9 unit Trainer /Instructor for the Scottsdale (AZ) Police Department. Scott is responsible for the training and on-going proficiency of the Departments’ six, dual-purpose, service dog teams. Scott is his Department’s K9/SWAT instructor and trainer, handling two Police Service dogs over the past ten years, specializing in tactical deployments with his SWAT team. Scott is certified as a Basic Service Dog Instructor through the Arizona Department of Corrections and is also a certifying official and instructor (Detection & Patrol) with the National Police Canine Association (NPCA).  Through his training and experience, Scott has developed and instructed a K9 High Risk Deployment (HRD) school, attended by numerous K9 teams throughout the State of Arizona. Scott owns and operates his own private, professional canine training and consulting business, Valor K9.  

 

Garry Harvey

Lieutenant, Madison County, (VA) Sheriff’s Office

Garry is a handler, trainer and person in charge of the Madison County, VA K-9 Unit.  Garry is one of the founders of EPCA and is currently the vice-president, director, trainer, and examiner for EPCA.  Garry will work with teams on tracking and problem solving relating to tracking to enhance tracking and scent work and for certification testing with the Eastern Police Canine Association.

 

Joel Mackown

K9 Handler/Trainer, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

Joel Mackown is a 20 year police officer with the Canada's national police force where he is an active duty police dog handler for the past 11 years.  Joel has has trained and worked two police service dogs BRIT and BADGE in his career resulting in the apprehension of hundreds of criminals.  Joel has instructed at police K9 seminars in Arizona, New York State and Massachusetts with his experience in tracking and K9 tactical deployment.  Joel has also been a guest presenter on K9 officer survival after both he and his K9 partner were shot in the line of duty.

 

Duane Shaffer

Captain (retired), Binghamton (NY), Police Department  

Duane is a well-known trainer and has handled a K-9 as a patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant and captain, the unit’s supervisor with the Binghamton, NY Police Department retiring as such.  Duane is currently a sworn officer with the Owego, NY Police Department.  Duane is one of the founders, directors, examiners and trainers for EPCA and STPCA.  Duane will work with you on Explosive Detection and Human Remains hides.  Duane will be available to examine NYS BMP Certification for Narcotics, Explosives, Evidence Recovery, Tracking and Patrol. 

 

Dan Smith

Police Officer (retired) Cheektowaga, (NY), Police Department

Dan is one of the founders and a director of the EPCA, and is currently the association’s secretary.  Dan will conduct an introduction, problem solving and practical exercises, drive development and enhancement of detection.

 

Damian Vice

Corporal Wilmington (DE) Police Department,

Damian is the former Wilmington Delaware Police Department K-9 Unit Commander and Trainer, as well as a trainer and Judge with the EPCA. Damian will be here taking bites to assist your dog with protection work.
